Vashpa Swedana Therapy

Vashpa Swedana Therapy
Vashpa Swedana (Steam Sudation Therapy) is an Ayurvedic treatment where the body is exposed to herbal steam after an oil massage (Abhyanga).
The word “Swedana” means “to perspire” — this therapy induces sweating to open skin pores, improve circulation, and help expel toxins (Ama) through the skin.
It is usually performed as a preparatory procedure in Panchakarma before main cleansing therapies like Vamana or Virechana, but it can also be given as a standalone treatment for pain relief and detoxification.
Types of Vashpa Swedana Therapy
Nadi Sweda – Localized steam application using a pipe from a steam vessel.
Bashpa Sweda – Full-body steam in a steam chamber or box (most common).
Sankara Sweda – Herbal bolus (potli) is heated and applied along with steam.
Avagaha Sweda – Immersion of the body in warm herbal decoction.
