Raktamokshan Therapy

Raktamokshana is a bloodletting therapy in Ayurveda, part of the Panchakarma detoxification system.
It involves the controlled removal of a small quantity of blood to eliminate vitiated Rakta (blood) and balance Pitta and Raktha doshas.
It is highly effective in treating skin disorders, chronic wounds, and conditions caused by impure blood

Types of Raktamokshan Therapy

1. Shastra Visravana (Surgical Bloodletting)
  • Siravedha (Venesection) – using a needle or surgical instrument to draw blood.

2. Anushastra Visravana (Non-Surgical Bloodletting)
  • Jalaukavacharana (Leech Therapy) – using medicinal leeches to remove impure blood.

  • Alabu (Cupping Method) – using heated cups to draw blood from superficial vessels.

  • Shringa (Horn Method) – using animal horn suction to remove blood

  • Bloodletting procedure: 20–40 minutes depending on method.

  • Post-care (dressing, herbal application, rest): 15–30 minutes.

  • Total Duration: Around 1–1.5 hours per session.

  • Number of sessions depends on patient condition (usually 1–5 sessions with gaps).
