Shirodhara Therapy

Shirodhara Therapy
Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating Ayurvedic therapy where a continuous stream of warm medicated oil, herbal decoctions, milk, or buttermilk is gently poured over the forehead (specifically the “third eye” area).
The word “Shiro” means head, and “Dhara” means flow.
This treatment is known for calming the mind, reducing stress, and promoting emotional balance. It is often used for insomnia, anxiety, headaches, and nervous system disorders
Types of Shirodhara
Taila Dhara – Uses warm medicated herbal oils; best for Vata and Pitta imbalances.
Ksheera Dhara – Uses milk processed with herbs; cooling and soothing effect for Pitta imbalance.
Takra Dhara – Uses buttermilk with herbs; beneficial for skin diseases, stress, and insomnia.
Jala Dhara – Uses coconut water or herbal water; mainly for calming and cooling during high Pitta conditions.
Kwatha Dhara – Uses herbal decoctions; for detoxification and specific therapeutic effects.
How it Works
Warm herbal liquid flows in a steady, gentle stream over the forehead.
This stimulates the Ajna Chakra (third eye) and the marma points on the head.
The rhythmic flow calms the hypothalamus, regulates hormonal balance, and relaxes the nervous system.
It helps reduce stress hormones like cortisol, improves blood circulation in the brain, and enhances mental clarity.
