Avagahana Therapy

Avagahana is an Ayurvedic therapy in which the patient is made to sit or immerse the affected part of the body in a warm medicated liquid (like herbal decoction, medicated milk, or oil) for a specific duration.
The therapy is designed to relieve pain, inflammation, and stiffness, and is often prescribed for conditions affecting the pelvic region, lower abdomen, hips, and lower back.

It is commonly used in urogenital disorders, musculoskeletal problems, and postnatal care.

Types of Avagahana Therapy

  1. Snigdha Avagahana (Oil-based Immersion)

    • Uses medicated oils like Dhanwantharam Taila, Mahanarayana Taila.

    • Best for dryness, stiffness, and Vata-related pain.

  2. Drava Avagahana (Liquid Decoction Immersion)

    • Uses herbal decoctions (Kashayas) like Dashamoola, Nirgundi.

    • Best for inflammation, swelling, and Kapha-Pitta-related conditions.

  3. Ksheera Avagahana (Milk-based Immersion)

    • Uses medicated milk infused with herbs.

    • Beneficial for burning sensation, soothing effect, and tissue nourishment.
